Meet Mr. Koger

I am Analisa Fernandez. I am a high school student, and over the summer, I interned for the Jubilee Academies District Marketing and Communications team. I was interested in learning new skills and meeting new people. My first assignment was to capture and write the story of our district founder and CEO, Mr. Koger. When I met Mr. Koger, I could tell he was a very caring person. I became excited to work somewhere with caring people and a good environment.

Mr. Koger is the founder and CEO of Jubilee Academies, a public charter school district in Texas. When he was five, his family moved from Brownsville, TX, to San Antonio, TX. He spent most of his life where many of our San Antonio schools reside, South East San Antonio. Mr. Koger met his wife in middle school and later married her after graduating high school. They have worked very hard to build up all of the wonderful Jubilee schools that serve communities throughout Texas today.

Although many do not know, Mr. Koger’s wife played a big part in founding Jubilee Academies. When the couple became parents, Mrs. Koger decided to homeschool their children due to things they experienced at the schools they had attended. The couple launched the charter school to create a safe environment for their children and others who could not afford a private school. When his wife learned more about charter schools, she took action and laid the groundwork to start the school. She soon realized she needed his help and asked him to step in. The two had a humble beginning, but they were trusted by their community and grew Jubilee more and more over time.  Throughout his career, Mr. Koger’s biggest supporters have been his wife and children; they have helped him by supporting him in all he does.

There were challenges that Mr. Koger faced while growing Jubilee, but he overcame them with the help of his wife and learning about what he could do with the right people to run his organization smoothly. One of the challenges faced was finding entrepreneurs to bring that mindset to Jubilee alongside the education mindset because “you need both to be successful in the charter environment.” Jubilee has overcome these difficult times and become the great school it is today with the help of the wonderful teachers and students inside the schools.

One of Mr. Koger’s favorite memories while being here has been connecting with the families of Jubilee. Some of the ways he brings the families closer together are through the BBQ University and the Finance University. Initiatives like these bring families together to connect and learn.

Success isn’t true success unless it is replicable and sustainable.
— Thomas Koger, CEO and Founder of Jubilee Academies

Mr. Koger’s philosophy is, “Success isn't true success unless it is replicable and sustainable.” Mr. Koger continues to work hard at Jubilee every day. Mr. Koger is a very good and thoughtful person. He is always willing to help people in need. He gives credit and acknowledges his wife when talking about the start of Jubilee and keeps himself humble. We could not ask for a better founder, and we are grateful to him every day.
