In Control of my Destiny - Activity

Being in control of our destiny is  an important skill we develop to help us lead ourselves. Follow the directions for the activity in this section.

Read aloud or have your student read the following:

To reach our destination of maximum potential we must choose what we focus on, what we choose to do, and what we choose to be! For example, A  student has a goal to go to college but does not have money for college. They could focus on the lack of resources or they could focus on getting good grades to earn a scholarship.

Making the choice to make good grades affects what I do.  I will study hard, read about my interests, and talk to school counselors about scholarship opportunities.

Discuss an example of choosing what to focus on and how that affects what you choose to do. Have your student decide on a goal and work through the process below:

  1. Write a goal

  2. Identify a barrier

  3. Choose the focus, and

  4. Decide on the action
