GEARUP! Panel Dives Into College Insights with Vibrant Student Voices

GEAR UP! (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal initiative designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and excel in post-secondary success (after high school). Their mission is to increase the number of lower-socioeconomic students exposed to higher educational programs, support their physical, emotional, and educational needs in order to equip them for success in their future college, career, or military goals. To bring awareness to the different opportunities college can offer, Jubilee San Antonio hosted a panel with a variety of college students in different stages of their university lives.

Panelists (Left to Right):

Panelists shared their perspectives on why they chose their respective colleges, their majors, and how they have experienced personal growth by being a part of active university communities. The students were inspired to ask questions of the college students, inquiring about the cost of college, the time commitment required, and what steps they should take to prepare before applying to universities.

Now, let's see how you do with some of the trivia questions that were asked of our students:

  • What is the term for the specialized field of study or subject that a student chooses to pursue in college?

  • What do you call courses that can earn you both high school and college credits?

  • Name the four types of degrees that were discussed during the session.

  • Can you identify the colleges represented by our panelists?

  • Recall two tips that were provided by our guests regarding paying for college.

  • Could you list the majors of each of our panelists?

  • What is the term used to describe all of the costs associated with college, including tuition, fees, books, room and board, and more?
